About Our Hope MCC

Our Hope provides an opportunity to explore a spiritual experience that affirms we are all God’s creation and that we are truly loved by our Creator. The congregation is comprised of people from every walk of life. Our diverse membership, blessed with many talents and gifts, is our greatest asset. With God’s strength and guidance, Our Hope will use these gifts. We will continue to grow and serve all people as we seek to spread God’s love throughout the world.

Our history, while brief, has been quite encouraging and exciting. Rev. Glenna Shepherd of Christ Covenant MCC in Decatur, GA and Rev. Jay Neely dreamed for five years of starting a Metropolitan Community Church in Athens. The impetus to begin the church was brought about by six Athens area residents who had been attending MCC churches in Atlanta. After much thought, prayer, and planning, the congregation held its first service in Athens on August 8, 1999. On that first Sunday, there were 125 people in attendance at the Holiday Inn on Hull Street. Our first membership class in September of 1999 had 34 in attendance, 23 of whom became members of the congregation.

Today, Our Hope has a current membership of 50 people, with general attendance between 45-65 people, and we are always welcoming more. Our Hope MCC offers diversity, freedom and real sincerity of worship. There over 300 MCC congregations in 22 countries around the world, and we would love for you to visit the MCC right here in Athens, GA–Our Hope MCC!
