| January 2012 GBC E-mailHappy New Year from Georgia Benefits Counsel! 2011 was a milestone year for GBC, as we received our 501(c)(3) tax exempt status from the IRS. More importantly, we helped protect same-sex relationships with wills, financial powers of attorney and health care directives.GBC also attended six Pride events in 2011: Augusta Pride, Black Gay Pride, Savannah Pride, South Georgia Pride, Athens Pride and Atlanta Pride. Through these Pride events we met hundreds more people who need our help. And those hundreds of Pride goers are only a fraction of the 21,318 same-sex Georgia couples identified by the 2010 U.S. Census.
In 2012, GBC wants to do more. We want more protection for same-sex relationships, attend more Prides and educate more people about the simple legal documents same-sex couples need to get some of the most basic protections that straight couples get for the price of a marriage license. Make a Tax Deductible Contribution!We can do more, but not without your contributions. There are many ways to contribute: donated office space to meet with clients, volunteers to find new couples at Pride events, and most of all financial support. In 2011, GBC received donated office space, website design and advertising thanks to the support of the LGBT community. We also thankfully received $2,400 in donations, which was enough for us to help 24 people, register for six Prides, pay associated travel costs, and cover marketing and other business expenses. In 2012, we are asking you to sponsor at least one couple for $61. That’s how much it costs for a marriage license in Fulton County. Your donation will assist in covering some of the following mission-critical expenses: $200 a month rents office space in Atlanta for two days a month |
